У одной вдовы было две дочери. Одна - Мари - работящая и покладистая девушка, другая - Луиза - ленивая и эгоистичная. Мать потакает капризам Луизы, взваливая всю работу по дому на Мари. Однажды Мари долго пряла у колодца, поранила палец до крови и испачкала веретено, опустила его в воду, чтобы обмыть, и обронила в колодец, но его непременно нужно достать, иначе мама рассердится. Отчаявшись, Мари попыталась его достать, но сама упала в колодец.... Очнулась она в волшебном месте, где печь, яблоня и ворон умеют разговаривать. Она стала работать по хозяйству у самой госпожи Метелицы. Когда девушка трясла перину госпожи так усердно, что летели перья, — в мире шел снег…
