🌍 Récemment, les astronomes ont fêté un anniversaire très important… celui du télescope James-Webb. Un anniversaire qui méritait d’être fêté, car il ne s’agit pas d’un télescope comme les autres ! Développé par la NASA, avec la participation de l’Agence spatiale européenne et de l’Agence spatiale canadienne, le James-Webb n’est ni plus ni moins que le plus grand et le plus onéreux télescope à la date de son lancement. Le lancement du James-Webb a eu lieu le 25 décembre 2021. En un mois, le télescope a atteint son orbite, à 1,5 millions de km de la Terre. Après une première image publiée en juillet 2022, le James-Webb a révélé des images toutes plus impressionnantes les unes que les autres, qui ont permis aux astronomes de faire de belles découvertes.

💥 Les MEILLEURES Découvertes du JAMES WEBB :
• Le lancement du télescope James-Webb répond à de nombreux objectifs. Au cours de sa mission, le James-Webb va se tourner vers les premières galaxies, celles qui sont apparues juste après le Big Bang, afin d’observer leur diversité et de comprendre leur formation. Il étudiera également les exoplanètes et leur atmosphère, à la recherche de biosignatures pouvant indiquer une vie extraterrestre. Il observera aussi le trou noir Sagittarius A*, situé au centre de la Voie Lactée, afin de compléter les images produites par un réseau de télescopes en mai 2022.

Un peu plus d’un an après son lancement, le télescope James-Webb a déjà dépassé toutes les attentes ! Il a dévoilé des images inédites de nébuleuses, pour la première fois visibles avec une telle qualité, de galaxies très lointaines et d’étoiles. Il a aussi fourni des images inédites de planètes de notre système solaire, comme Jupiter et Neptune qui n’avaient jamais été photographiées avec autant de précision ! Les astronomes sont agréablement surpris : le James-Webb n’a rencontré aucun problème technique et ses instruments sont encore plus efficaces que ce que l’on avait espéré !

La première image du télescope James-Webb a été dévoilée le 12 juillet 2022. Il s’agit d’une photographie de l’amas de galaxies SMACS 0723 tel qu’il était il y a 4,6 milliards d’années. Décrite par la NASA comme « l’image infrarouge la plus profonde et la plus nette de l’Univers lointain à ce jour », cette image est historique. Pourtant, ce n’est pas vraiment l’image la plus profonde jamais obtenue puisque le satellite Planck a photographié le fond diffus cosmologique, c’est-à-dire les plus vieux photons de l’Univers, en 2013.
Pour en revenir à la première image du James-Webb, SMACS 0723 est un amas compact de galaxies situé à plus de 4 milliards d’années lumières de la Terre. La zone photographiée n’est en fait pas plus grande qu’un grain de sable ! Étonnant, non ? Cette image est impressionnante par sa précision (on y observe 19 galaxies au lieu des 5 observées par Hubble) mais pas seulement : elle illustre aussi un effet de relativité générale décrite par Albert Einstein, la lentille gravitationnelle. L’effet de lentille gravitationnelle est la déviation de la lumière par une masse (planète, galaxie ou amas de galaxie). Plus concrètement, lorsqu’un corps céleste très massif se trouve entre un observateur et une source lumineuse lointaine, la lentille gravitationnelle fait dévier les rayons lumineux qui passent près d’elle et déforme les images que l’observateur reçoit.
Cette première image de James-Webb, parce qu’elle est plus nette et plus détaillée que toutes les images fournies par Hubble, pourra aider les scientifiques à mesurer les âges et les masses des amas d’étoiles au sein des galaxies lointaines afin de construire des modèles plus précis des galaxies qui existaient au « printemps cosmique »
