Carl Sagan nació en Nueva York en 1934 y se graduó en Física en la universidad de Chicago en 1955 y obtuvo el doctorado en astrofísica en 1960. Colaboró con la NASA durante 30 años en programas de investigación planetaria como Mariner y Voyager y publicó numerosos trabajos relacionados con el mundo de la astronomía. Pero no será hasta 1980 cuando presentará la serie televisiva Cosmos, compuesta por trece capítulos que darían lugar al libro del mismo nombre que fue líder de ventas en 60 países convirtiéndose en el libro de ciencia más vendido del siglo pasado. Sagan murió en 1996 debido a una extraña enfermedad que le fue diagnosticada dos años atrás.

El primero de los 13 capítulos que componen la serie Cosmos, nos introduce de lleno en la vida real, en la que Carl Sagan nos propondrá un viaje en la nave “Imaginación” que nos llevará a descubrir los misterios del Universo, dándonos así a conocer fenómenos cósmicos tales como las supernovas, las estrellas o los quásares.

Emprendemos el viaje por el cosmos que, guiado por las mismas leyes físicas en toda su extensión, nos muestra el conjunto de estrellas que forman un quásar, que engulle galaxias más pequeñas a su vez. Nos introduce el concepto de año-luz, término que empleará para sus explicaciones.

🌍 Par une nuit claire, l'Homme lève les yeux au ciel. Il a l'immense privilège d'être le spectateur d'une des plus belles œuvres que la nature ait à lui offrir. Élevés dans le ciel, une multitude de luminaires célestes, que sont les étoiles, offre alors un ravissement pour les yeux. Cette fascination pour la magnificence des cieux a un jour fait naître une science, l'astronomie. Les découvertes qui en ont découlé ont permis une considérable avancée dans le savoir lié à notre cosmos. Nous disposons aujourd'hui de moyens technologiques importants pour tenter de percer les secrets de ce que nous voyons mais ne pouvons pas atteindre. Télescopes, satellites, engins robotisés envoyés arpenter des planètes inaccessibles à l'Homme... L'astronomie évolue à grande vitesse et nous en savons de plus en plus sur l'univers. Ces découvertes conférent à l'Homme moderne un sentiment de toute puissance sur le monde qui l'entoure. Mais à l'inverse, la prise de conscience de l'immensité de l'univers a plus que jamais rapetissé l'Homme. Alors qu'il y a quelques siècles, l'espèce humaine pensait être le centre du monde et plaçait la terre au centre de l'univers, la cosmologie moderne a scientifiquement prouvé l'erreur de cette perception. Les Hommes assignaient alors à l'humanité une place au premier rang, mais aujourd'hui, la pensée tend plus à considérer l'espèce humaine comme une poussière de sable apparue par hasard dans un vaste océan cosmique.

L'espèce humaine a-t-elle une place privilégiée dans l'univers ? Comment la terre, la vie puis l'Homme sont-ils apparus ? Quel avenir peut-on prédire à l'Homo sapiens ?
De manière à mieux situer la place de l'Homme, il peut être utile de regarder les événements sous un autre angle, depuis le début de l'univers jusqu'à aujourd'hui afin de comprendre d'où nous venons et où nous allons…

💥 L'Immensité de l'Univers :
• L'univers est l'ensemble de la matière et de l'énergie distribué dans l'espace-temps. Il se compose de milliards de galaxies, constituées elles-mêmes de milliards d'étoiles autour desquelles peuvent graviter des planètes formant ainsi un système. On estime aujourd'hui que le diamètre de l'univers observable serait de 100 milliards d'années lumière. Toutes les structures le composant sont en perpétuelle évolution.

La galaxie dans laquelle évolue l'Homme est la Voie lactée. Riches d'au moins 200 milliards d'étoiles et de plus de 100 milliards de planètes, les scientifiques estiment son diamètre jusqu'à 200 000 années-lumière. La Voie lactée abrite le système solaire et par conséquent, la terre, le point d'attache et d'origine de l'Homme. Observée de la terre, la Voie lactée s'apparente à une bande blanchâtre formant un arc dans le ciel.

Parmi les étoiles constituant notre galaxie, il y en a une, majestueuse, qui scintille et prodigue lumière et chaleur à tout notre système, c'est le soleil.
Distante d'environ 150 millions de kilomètres, le soleil est l'étoile la plus proche de la terre. Le système solaire est défini par l'étoile, le soleil, et par tous les objets célestes qui gravitent autour d'elle. Parmi eux, huit planètes confirmées dansent autour du soleil sur le rythme du plan de l'écliptique : Mercure, Vénus, Terre et Mars qui sont des planètes telluriques principalement constituées de roches, et Jupiter, Saturne, Uranus et Neptune qui sont des planètes gazeuses principalement constituées de gaz. D'un diamètre de 1,4 millions de kilomètres, le soleil représente à lui seul 99 % de la masse du système solaire. Les scientifiques estiment qu'il en est à la moitié de sa vie et qu'il pourrait encore brûler pendant 5 milliards d'années. L'énergie dégagée par cette sphère de lumière est d'une importance capitale pour la vie sur notre planète, et nos ancêtres en ont pris conscience très tôt. En effet, nombre de civilisations ont étudié son mouvement annuel afin de définir des saisons et d'en faire un allié dans leur agriculture.

Après avoir voyager dans l'univers puis la voie lactée, rapprochons-nous doucement de la planète qui réunit les conditions de vie des Hommes : la terre.

Remove the second beam splitter and interference becomes impossible. Instead, the first beam splitter sends the photon down one path or the other, like a particle. As the paths cross where the second beam splitter would have been, the detectors click with equal probabilities regardless of the paths' lengths. Wheeler realized that experimenters could even wait to remove the second beam splitter until after the photon had passed the first beam splitter. That assertion suggests, weirdly, that a decision in the present determines an event in the past: whether the photon split like a wave or took one path like a particle. Quantum theory avoids the issue by assuming that, until measured, the photon remains both a particle and a wave.
Now, a team led by Francesco Vedovato and Paolo Villoresi of the University of Padua in Italy has performed a version of the experiment using the 1.5-meter telescope at the Matera Laser Ranging Observatory in southern Italy to bounce photons off satellites thousands of kilometers away. At such distances, physicists cannot make light take two parallel paths, Villoresi notes, as the spreading beams would overlap and merge. Instead, they send a photon through a Mach-Zehnder interferometer on Earth that has paths of very different lengths. The difference in path lengths splits the single pulse into two, separated in time by 3.5 nanoseconds, which the telescope then shoots skyward.
Once the pulses return, the experimenters run them back through the interferometer. The apparatus can either undo the time shift so that the two pulses overlap and interfere like waves or double it so that no interference is possible. Of course, the physicists must choose which thing happens. When the pulses first leave the interferometer, they have different polarizations. To undo the time shift, physicists must first use a very fast electronic polarization to change their polarization in a certain way. To double the time shift, they simply leave their polarization alone.

In May, physicists in China used a satellite to establish a weird quantum connection called entanglement between two photons sent to widely separated cities.

Delayed-choice experiments could help probe the boundary between relativity—which requires that cause precede effect—and quantum theory, Roch says. Even though, strictly speaking, the effect does not violate causality, it still raises a tension by suggesting that a measurement in the present shapes what can be inferred about the past. "This area where you mix quantum mechanics and relativity is still relatively unexplored," Roch says, "and this is the sort of experiment that raised the possibility of probing the link" between the two.
