Music Gym was delighted to present an interactive and exciting workshop on Bengali Folk and Modern Music by Arko Mukherjee on 22nd July, 2012 at Space.

Workshop Overview
Music in Bengal has always been influenced by multiple genres and sub-genres of music across the world. Bengal has a rich variety of folk forms like Bhatiyali, Bhawaiya, Baul, Fakiri, Manbhumi, Bhadu, Tushu,Bihu, Goalpariya, Murshidi and many others due to its great diversity of climate, lifestyle and philosophy. Interestingly, Bengali modern music has also been influenced by these genres and by folk forms of other parts of the world like Jewish, Bluegrass, Celtic, Latin etc. We find such influences in the songs of Rabindranath Tagore, Nazrul Islam, and later in the compositions of S. D. Burman, Salil Chowdhury, Akhilbandhu Ghosh and others.

This two hour workshop was designed to help broaden and develop participants' understanding and practical exploration of several folk forms of Bengal and the influence of multiple genres and sub genres of the world on the sound scape of Bengali modern music.

In the early 1970s, a musical sensation took over New York City. It was called Disco. Before Disco became synonymous with Saturday Night Fever, Rod Stewart, and celebrity-fueled parties, it was an underground movement powered by the innovations of young DJs challenging themselves and each other to throw the city’s most adventurous dance parties.

By 1973, their influence as musical taste makers became apparent, and a handful of unconventional dance tracks became pop crossover hits. With barely any radio airplay, songs like "Love Theme" and "Girl You Need a Change of Mind" became defining tracks of the disco era.

These songs were repetitive, hypnotic, and funky, and they were also pretty long compared to other pop hits. That presented a problem for DJs using 7-inch 45rpm singles, which fit only 3:30 minutes of quality audio on them, during their night-long sets. They needed a vinyl record that could make their most popular tracks sound powerful on a dance floor and last the whole night.

In 1976, an accidental studio discovery by Disco pioneer Tom Moulton provided the solution: A 12-inch single. By stretching one song across 12 inches of vinyl, a format typically reserved for full-length albums, those extended dance tracks had room to breath.

By the 1980s, the 12-inch single dominated pop music. It not only changed the sound of records, it allowed for music producers to experiment with length and structure.

Illusionist David Copperfield FLIES! Now remastered to 1080p and 60fps!

This was created for the July 1, 2021 Tales From SYL Live Stream as a test to see what kind of quality I could achieve. It was the first time I've used Movavi Video Converter 2021.

The original video had been uploaded to YouTube with an incorrectly stretched aspect ration of 16:9 and poorly upscaled to 720p. I returned it to its native 4:3; downscaled it to its native 640x480 resolution; upscale it to 1080p; and finally interpolated the frame rate to 60fps.

The result isn't entirely ideal, but considering the number of changes, it's not bad.

The video contains a Movavi watermark because I haven't yet paid for the product. This was the program used to correct the aspect ratio and downscale it to its native resolution. Given how well it worked, I will do so and can recommend it.
