In a one-of-a-kind specially created illusion, David Copperfield attempted to “find the missing 15th star" on the Star-Spangled Banner.
This illusion was performed during an event on Flag Day at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
The Star-Spangled Banner flew above Ft. McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812. Francis Scott Key saw the enormous flag flying over the fort and was inspired to write the song that became the national anthem. he flag remained with the family of the commander of Fort McHenry, Lt. Col. George Armistead, after the battle. Family members permitted “souveniring,” or the snipping of small pieces from the flag. One star was cut out “for some official person” but who that person was is unknown to historians. The family loaned the Star-Spangled Banner to the Smithsonian in 1907 and gifted it in 1912 to be shared with the nation.
“The Star-Spangled Banner is one of our nation’s most treasured objects, a lasting symbol of this country’s promise,” Hartig said. “The Smithsonian and Copperfield partnership allows us to spark the public’s imagination and capture their curiosity to learn more about our flag."

RAPE INVESTIGATION INTO DAVID COPPERFIELD CLOSED
Federal prosecutors closed a two-year rape investigation of magician David Copperfield on Tuesday (12 JAN 2010) without filing charges. Police say his accuser made a false sexual assault claim against another man last month.
The illusionist''s lawyers, Angelo Calfo and Patty Eakes, previously said he denied the allegations and called the
lawsuit "extortion for money, plain and simple," but they had no immediate comment on the prosecutor''s decision.
The end of the federal investigation came in a brief court filing by Assistant U.S. Attorney, Susan Roe.
The U.S. attorney''s office in Seattle declined to discuss its reasons, but in a written statement, spokeswoman Emily
Langlie said that generally, investigations may be closed without charges if prosecutors determine there is no federal jurisdiction, no federal laws were broken, or that it would be impossible to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt.
"Neither the investigation, nor its termination, should be perceived as a comment on guilt or innocence," the statement said.
The woman who made the complaint, a 23-year-old fashion model, waitress and former Miss Washington contestant, said in a related civil lawsuit against Copperfield that she met him when he pulled her out of the crowd and onto the stage
during a performance in Kennewick, in southeastern Washington.
She was later invited to visit his private island in the Bahamas in July 2007.
The woman claimed that once she arrived, Copperfield, whose real name is David Kotkin, sexually assaulted her, in one instance holding her head under water to coerce her.
"She is disappointed, but it wasn''t completely unexpected given the jurisdictional issue of prosecuting him here for
something that happened on his private island," said Rebecca Roe, a lawyer for the woman.
Bellevue Police records obtained by The Associated Press on Tuesday indicate that Copperfield''s accuser made false sexual assault allegations against another man last month.
Police referred the matter to prosecutors for potential charges of prostitution and making a false or misleading statement to a public servant.
According to the investigation reports, the woman was working as a server at a restaurant and decided to meet with a customer for drinks on December 2.
She and another woman met the man, but before long the other woman left - later telling police it was because the other two had become so affectionate toward each other that it was making her uncomfortable.
Copperfield''s accuser and the other man rented a hotel room, and surveillance images included in the police records showed them kissing and holding each other in the lobby.
The woman later exited the hotel room and told hotel staff the man took advantage of her, the police documents said.
She said she was dizzy and couldn''t remember what happened, but only awoke to find him on top of her, police said.
But the man also called police, saying she left the room and falsely accused him to the staff because he refused to

For the Plaintiff Gavin Cox and his wife Mihn the jury's decision after years of litigation, and a nearly two-month trial, it was a stunning defeat.
While the jury found that MGM and David Copperfield were negligent for a backstage fall Gavin claims caused him brain damage. They also found there was not sufficient proof to hold the casino and magician accountable and that means Gavin Cox was fully liable for his injury.

Charles John Huffam Dickens (/ˈtʃɑrlz ˈdɪkɪnz/; 7 February 1812 -- 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic who is generally regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian period and the creator of some of the world's most memorable fictional characters. During his lifetime Dickens's works enjoyed unprecedented popularity and fame, and by the twentieth century his literary genius was fully recognized by critics and scholars. His novels and short stories continue to enjoy an enduring popularity among the general reading public.
Born in Portsmouth, England, Dickens left school to work in a factory after his father was thrown into debtors' prison. Though he had little formal education, his early impoverishment drove him to succeed. He edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels and hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, lectured and performed extensively, was an indefatigable letter writer, and campaigned vigorously for children's rights, education, and other social reforms.
Dickens sprang to fame with the 1836 serial publication of The Pickwick Papers. Within a few years he had become an international literary celebrity, celebrated for his humour, satire, and keen observation of character and society. His novels, most published in monthly or weekly instalments, pioneered the serial publication of narrative fiction, which became the dominant Victorian mode for novel publication. The instalment format allowed Dickens to evaluate his audience's reaction, and he often modified his plot and character development based on such feedback. For example, when his wife's chiropodist expressed distress at the way Miss Mowcher in David Copperfield seemed to reflect her disabilities, Dickens went on to improve the character with positive lineaments. Fagin in Oliver Twist apparently mirrors the famous fence, Ikey Solomon; His caricature of Leigh Hunt in the figure of Mr Skimpole in Bleak House was likewise toned down on advice from some of his friends, as they read episodes. In the same novel, both Lawrence Boythorne and Mooney the beadle are drawn from real life -- Boythorne from Walter Savage Landor and Mooney from 'Looney', a beadle at Salisbury Square. His plots were carefully constructed, and Dickens often wove in elements from topical events into his narratives. Masses of the illiterate poor chipped in ha'pennies to have each new monthly episode read to them, opening up and inspiring a new class of readers.
Dickens was regarded as the 'literary colossus' of his age. His 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol, is one of the most influential works ever written, and it remains popular and continues to inspire adaptations in every artistic genre. His creative genius has been praised by fellow writers—from Leo Tolstoy to G. K. Chesterton and George Orwell—for its realism, comedy, prose style, unique characterisations, and social criticism. On the other hand Oscar Wilde, Henry James and Virginia Woolf complained of a lack of psychological depth, loose writing, and a vein of saccharine sentimentalism.
David Copperfield is the common name of the eighth novel by Charles Dickens, first published as a novel in 1850. Its full title is The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery (Which He Never Meant to Publish on Any Account). Like most of his works, it originally appeared in serial form during the two preceding years. Many elements of the novel follow events in Dickens' own life, and it is probably the most autobiographical of his novels. In the preface to the 1867 edition, Dickens wrote, "...like many fond parents, I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child. And his name is David Copperfield."
